Feasting on the Heidel-berger: (September 26th – December 19th) In the 16th Century, when the Bible was translated into the common language of the people and they began to read it, an explosion of understanding burst on the scene about the power and truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As people read the Bible, meditated on it, grappled with it, discussed it – core beliefs began to solidify. Catechisms (teaching and learning aids) were formed by various faith groups to educate and train teenagers in the knowledge of core truths and beliefs. The Heidelberg Catechism is one of them. We will spend a couple months in the core Scripture chapters and verses that support the core beliefs of the Christian faith. We will feast on this ‘burger’ from Heidelberg as we learn that grace precedes faith, that we are held providentially in the hand of God, that our Heavenly Father pleads our cause before his Father, and that the Holy Spirit adopts us into the family of God. The first voice we will listen too in this series is the Bible. The second voice will be the promptings of the Holy Spirit of God in the depth of our being in agreement with Scripture. The third voice will be the faithful testimony of the Heidelberg Catechism (HC). The HC is one of our church’s trusted confessional statements. It answers well the question, “What is it that you believe?” And begins with an into question, “What is your only comfort in life and in death?” The HC answers these questions succinctly and passionately.
